Overview
The Assassin Snail is a fascinating freshwater species prized for its ability to control pest snail populations in aquariums. Native to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, these carnivorous snails actively hunt and consume other snails, making them a natural solution for overpopulation issues. Their striking yellow and dark brown striped shells add a unique aesthetic to any tank.
Basic Information
- Scientific Name: Anentome helena
- Common Name: Assassin Snail, Snail-Eating Snail
- Origin: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand
- Maximum Size: 2 cm (0.8 inches)
- Temperature Range: 22-27°C
-
Water Parameters:
- pH: 7.2-8.0
- Hardness: 10-25 dH
- Prefers moderately hard, alkaline water
- Tank Compatibility: Suitable for community tanks
- Lighting Requirements: No special requirements
Care and Behavior
The Assassin Snail is an active and efficient predator, primarily feeding on pest snails such as pond snails and Malaysian Trumpet Snails. When not hunting, it burrows into the substrate, with only its sensitive proboscis ("snorkel") exposed to detect movement. Although they help maintain a balanced tank ecosystem, they are generally safe with larger ornamental snails and will not harm healthy fish or plants.
While rare, there have been occasional reports of Assassin Snails preying on small shrimp. However, this is unlikely if they are well-fed. For optimal health, provide a soft sandy substrate to allow natural burrowing behavior and maintain good water quality with a moderate current.
Feeding
Assassin Snails are carnivorous and should be provided with a protein-rich diet, including:
- Live pest snails (pond snails, Malaysian Trumpet Snails, etc.)
- Bloodworms and white mosquito larvae
- Vitamin-enriched brine shrimp and Mysis shrimp
- Sinking catfish pellets and granules
Breeding
Unlike many common pest snails, Assassin Snails reproduce at a much slower rate. They are not hermaphroditic, so a group of snails increases the likelihood of having both sexes for breeding.
Breeding Process:
- Mating can last several hours.
- Eggs are laid singly in small, semi-transparent pouches on hard surfaces like glass or decorations.
- Once hatched, the juveniles burrow into the substrate and remain hidden for several weeks to months before reappearing.
Due to their slow reproduction rate, they do not typically overpopulate an aquarium like other snails.
Why Choose Assassin Snails?
✅ Excellent for pest snail control – A natural and effective way to manage unwanted snails.
✅ Beautiful coloration – Their distinctive striped shells add visual interest.
✅ Easy to care for – Hardy and adaptable to a range of water conditions.
✅ Slow reproduction rate – Unlike pest snails, they won’t overrun your tank.
Whether you're looking to manage snail populations or simply add an interesting new inhabitant to your tank, the Assassin Snail is a fantastic addition to any freshwater aquarium!

Bought these as I’d got some bladder snails into the tank from plants, and they went nuts breeding, put these assassins in and they’re taking care of business. Not seeing nearly as many of the bladders, and the assassins are fascinating to watch and how they eat.
