Live Microworm Culture — Essential Live Food for Growing Fry
A live Microworm culture provides a thriving colony of Panagrellus redivivus, a harmless, free-living nematode species that has become a staple live food for fish breeders worldwide.
These tiny worms are ideal for feeding fry that have outgrown infusoria but are not yet large enough to take baby brine shrimp.
Microworms grow to around 1–2 mm in length and offer an excellent transition food, packed with protein and movement to trigger natural feeding responses in young fish.
Key Benefits
- Perfect Size for Fry — Ideal for slightly older fry that can’t yet handle baby brine shrimp, providing a vital protein boost for early growth.
- Easy to Harvest — Collect directly from the sides of the culture container using a cotton bud or fingertip — no special tools required.
- Highly Nutritious — Rich in natural fats and proteins that promote strong, rapid development in juvenile fish.
- Simple to Maintain — Cultures thrive in basic porridge oats or mashed potato medium; no special equipment or maintenance needed.
- Reliable & Productive — A single culture can produce microworms daily for several months with minimal care.
How to Use
- Gently collect a small amount of microworms from the container wall using a cotton bud, stick, or clean finger.
- Rinse or dip the worms in a small amount of tank water to remove any excess culture medium.
- Feed directly to your fry — they will eagerly chase and consume the moving worms.
- Offer 1–2 small feeds per day, adjusting based on fry numbers and appetite.
- Use alongside other foods (such as vinegar eels or powdered fry foods) for a complete and varied diet.
Culturing & Maintenance Tips
- Culture Setup: Spread a thin layer of cooked porridge oats or mashed potato (room temperature) about 1–2 cm deep in a plastic tub. Add a small pinch of baker’s yeast and a spoonful of starter culture.
- Cover & Airflow: Loosely fit the lid or use cling film with small holes to allow air exchange while keeping pests out.
- Temperature: Maintain room temperature (18–25 °C). Avoid direct sunlight or extreme heat.
- Harvesting: When the container walls appear covered with tiny, glistening worms, gently wipe them off with a cotton bud and feed directly to your fry.
- Culture Renewal: After a few weeks, or when the medium begins to darken and smell sour, start a new batch by transferring a small amount of the live worms into fresh medium.
- Backup Cultures: Keep at least one spare culture as a safeguard against crashes or contamination.
